Who We Are

Founded by two passionate Kenyan farmers from families steeped in tea brokering and coffee cultivation, Abuya Coffee and Tea Export was established to bridge the gap between the growers and global markets. We are not just exporters — we are curators of Kenya’s agricultural legacy.

Our Story

From the red volcanic-rich highlands of Meru and Nyeri, our founders have worked with multiple small-scale farmers to ensure their voices are heard and their harvests are valued. By eliminating unnecessary middlemen and pushing for traceable, ethical trade, we ensure more profit goes back to the farmer.

Meet the Founders

Co-founder 1

James Kubai

Born into the rolling highlands of Meru, where coffee is more than a crop—it's a way of life. His family has cultivated Arabica coffee for generations, nurturing heirloom varieties like SL28 and SL34 under the shade of indigenous trees. From hand-picking cherries with his parents to attending cooperative meetings as a teenager, James gained firsthand insight into both the potential and the pitfalls of Kenya’s coffee sector.

Co-founder 2

Andrew Kamau

Hailing from the lush green hills of Nyeri, a region synonymous with some of the world’s most sought-after teas. Raised in a family of tea brokers and auction experts, Andrew learned the art of cupping, grading, and navigating the complex supply chains that define the global tea industry. He saw how too often, the value of tea was lost long before it ever left the farm.

Why We Started Abuya

For decades, Kenyan coffee and tea have been prized globally for their rich profiles—bright acidity, floral notes, brisk liquors. Yet behind every cup lies a silent workforce of smallholder farmers whose stories rarely reach the marketplace.

Kenya has undergone significant reforms in both the coffee and tea sectors—from the liberalization of cooperatives to recent government efforts to decentralize auction systems and increase farmer earnings. While progress has been made, challenges like limited traceability, volatile pricing, and middlemen exploitation still persist.

Abuya was born as a response to these challenges. Our vision is clear: To reconnect the global buyer with the heartbeat of Kenyan agriculture. We want to do more than export a product—we want to export identity, dignity, and traceability.
